Revenge of the Daylist
By: Amy Grill
It’s December. It’s cold and gray and every Instagram story you see is the same Spotify Wrapped over and over. It hits you that perhaps you’re more basic than you’d like to think. This realization inspires your new year’s resolution: to be cooler than everyone you went to high school with. Of course, this includes the best and niches and most-underground music taste. But by March, you find yourself falling into old habits, searching for Taylor Swift without second thought. Out of sheer desperation, you stumble upon your Daylist.
Me personally, I’ve become well acquainted with my Daylist. Sometimes I feel like they know me better than I know myself! The long winded titles dictate my state of my mind and my music. I am no longer forced to make these harrowing decisions on my own. Lately, though, something seems to have shifted between my daylist and I.
It started off fun. We were developing a great rapport with one another:
- Country road ye-ye saturday afternoon
- Storm nature sounds tuesday night
- Millennial strange friday morning
- Whiny goblincore friday early morning
- Mouth organ harmonica wednesday morning
Then I just got confused:
- Chaotic academia social simulation gaming wednesday early morning
- Fbueipenvcbtuhtgbh rthuit vbur4ov monday night
- One fish two fish red fish blue fish thursday late early afternoon
I was a bit offended for a weekend, but I thought I could let it slide. Despite the names, the songs weren’t too shabby!
- Nerd ugly freako saturday morning
- Loser loser loser loser sunday afternoon
Most recently though, they seem to be crossing a line. Do these seem like threats to you? Should I cancel my premium subscription? Just look at this past week!
- Car accident hurricane natural disaster monday middle of the night
- War criminal death row tuesday late afternoon
- Great Chicago Fire arsonist explosion thursday morning
- Mysterious disappearance missing person friday night
Oh! It’s precisely 1:12! My daylist has been updated!
- Last day on earth sunday night 9:37
Wait a second. Maybe I should be worried. Is this worth switching to Pandora?
